i didn't phrase that right, did i. comparing the two one would think they have zero in common. one think they were two unrelated activities.

that interview of reeves, hart, and scott has 6 parts to it. the audio isn't the best, but maybe you can make it out.

Re: Oldtime Strongmen/Golden Age of Bodybuilding

one of the many differences i've noticed in the two eras, really three eras, of bbing, is the absence of a particular duo of brothers from the first, and the absence of the dominant bbing league of the latter two eras that was founded by those two brothers. it's not that they weren't around in the early era, nor that they weren't a force in that early era. they were, but they didn't dominate it. the league they founded that has grown to be the dominate force wasn't really around in the golden era, except on paper and in the persons of those two brothers. that league held it's first permanent contest in 1959. i think most would agree that the golden era was over by then. can one surmise that the decay of bbing and the rise of the ifbb have no connection? i think not. you had macfadden, and atlas, and hoffman, and leiderman, and the other early gurus, that produced the physiques of reeves, et al. then the weider boys thought they'd be in the same order as those people, canadian versions of macfadden, and they gave us ronnie coleman and jay cutler, and the era of drugged bbing. in all fairness tho, hoffman introduced steroids.

hoffman was over the usa olympic weight lifting team and he refused to give them steroids. he was promptly clobbered by the soviet lifters that were taking steroids. that was perhaps a factor in his thoughts on steroidal use. one of the trainers wanted to give the team steroids. the guy went to the san diego chargers football team and gave them steroids. they won the championship easily and in terms of team speed the chargers made the other teams in the afl and nfl look like they were running in mud by comparison.

yep. hoffman did it. atlas' old arch enemy. a real villain. hoffman was the anti-thesis to atlas. and the weider boys were the anti-thesis to macfadden.
