Drug Free BBing?

i saw where the guy who introduced steroids to the bbing world expressed his regrets in having done so before he passed away.

i was reading one bber relate how he was introduced to steroids. it was 1963. he was 16. he went to hoffman's gym at the york barbell co. to start lifting. one of the lifters there took him under his wing. they went for a ride and the guy took him to the trunk of his car and showed him what he needed to get big. he said he needed to take the pink pills - dianabol, and the other pills - speed. which brings me to the main premise of my thread. we know when steroids came into bbing, but when did speed come in? or canned oxygen? caffeine can enhance performance in a similar way as speed, so how long have bbers used it? was bbing really ever drug free?

my corner of the bbing world is charles atlas and jack lalanne. atlas explicitly forbids the use of caffeine in his course. i'm sure he would have condemned speed as well.

i'm beginning to wonder. although reeves' generation of bbers didn't have steroids, speed and canned oxygen, as well as caffeine, were available. the military used speed extensively during ww2, and reeves fought in the infantry in the phillipines, so he would have known about speed. that video of the mr world contest in cannes, france on another thread shows some of the contestants smoking cigarettes. was reeves' generation of bbers truly drug free? was reeves? did he use canned oxygen? it's only available where i live by prescription, so it's classed as a drug in my town. i'm inclined to think reeves didn't use speed in his bbing career. but i'm not so sure about caffeine or canned O2.

i'm beginning to think the era of drug free bbing may have died sometime prior to ww2, and the last remaining vestiges of it is charles atlas, jack lalanne, and some others one might find on the sandow site. well anyway, the question is, when did speed, caffeine, and canned O2 enter the bbing world?

A good bit of the lifestyle information in Reeves' book is similar to Atlas. I don't think he drank coffee. Besides his home made protein mix and electrolyte drink he mentions bee pollen for energy and wheat germ. I doubt he did oxygen. Speed would keep a person up, but I don't know about it boosting energy. Reeves comes across as honest and sincere in his book. Marlon knows a guy that worked out with Reeves and he said he was straighter than straight. He's very anti drug in his book. He had that old time attitude that you did it with diet and exercise.

there's probably nothing really wrong healthwise with using O2. speed? i just don't see reeves using it, but i can't say others of his day didn't use it. atlas drinked coffee, come to think of it. sanka. but i doubt it was for exercise enhancement. tea has caffeine in it. but i don't think that it should count against one being an all natural bber. but i would draw the line with speed. but when did bbers start using speed is what i'm curious about. what would its purpose in bbing be? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amphetamine.

I guess part of the answer is in the 1st paragraph of the wiki article, to diminish appetite & lose weight. So I guess it was used for cutting. Because it keeps you awake it could have been used to extend the workout time.

I just think of old time entertainers, like Judy Garland, that took them, and downers, and were wrecks by the time they were 40.

The new way to cheat is to get a Doc to say you have low thyroid so you can get these strong metabolism boosters to burn fat to cut. They are legal right now because it's for a medical condition. Any way to cheat is found and used, no matter the consequences in the long run.

The growth hormone not only enlarges muscles, but also the internal organs. I guess winning means everything, even dying in your 40s or 50s.

yep. most of the old timers were probably clean. they were still schooled by atlas and macfadden and a few others who preached against even the use of medicine, let alone drugs. i think reeves was probably clean. i think park probably used canned O2 tho. the problem with O2 is it's illegal in my town unless you have a doc's prescription. and i think it would be unethical for a doc to prescribe any drug for non medicinal reasons. i had an aunt who was a licensed ordained minister in the AofG. the AofG is strongly opposed to drinking alcohol. the doc prescribed for her a can of beer a day. she obeyed. i digress. i don't know why this made me think of her.

A doctor told my grandpa to have a shot of whiskey every day.

well, testosterone was around back in the 40's here in the usa. aqueous(testosterone suspension)was around back then. by the way, it has been said by many people that the first bodybuilder to use it, was a multiple mr. america winner from the 40's who was probably the most famous of them all, and it wasn't reeves. catch what i am saying? the first officially recognised steroid was dianabol by john ziegler. yes, before his death he said he was sorry for inventing it, because he seen how it was now abused by so many young people and all. but, he was not the inventor os steroids in the usa. they were around 15 years in america before dianabol was. the nazi's used the testosterone android on their ss troops to see how much it improved their performance. needless to say, they loved the results! but, the doses used back then pailed in comparison to what is used today. well, now bodybuilders will even use cocaine when cutting for a contest. that's how out of control it is. speed has been around since maybe the 20's, i think. it has been used for a long time in bodybuilding, since the 40's also. speed is a diet pill, plain and simple. it's still available for dieting. it gives you a lot of energy and supresses your appetite for long periods. tha tway, you can train all day on virtually no food. drugs have been involved in bodybuilding since the 40's, maybe even sooner than that. i doubt seriously that reeves used steroids. he didn't look tha part. his muscle looked totally natural to me.

The only multiple Mr America winner I can think of from the 40's would be Grimek. He did end up with Hoffman. Reeves won it once. Actually, early on, you could only win it once. There was no title defense. I think multiple wins were allowed later like in the 60's. Now there you can take your pick of BBers. Larry Scott was clean & worked out at Vince's gym & that was an anti drug group there. That would leave Draper and others. Draper admits to have used steroids.

reeves said any man who didn't have enough of his own testosterone had no business bbing. the only shots he took were b12 shots, which is probably the best way of taking b12. i'm 100% confident reeves was all natural. i doubt if he used O2 either. bbing wasn't a big sport back in the early days, and it didn't have as much money tied up in it either, so i doubt if there was a great deal of drug use like you see today. i think the money and the drugs go hand in hand. back when it was just an amateur activity, and the winner got only a trophy and a title, the drug use was probably small. i know bbers don't get a whole lot of money for winning a title, but they do get a whole lot of money for making supplement and equipment endorsements, books, courses, and the acting prospects. the potential earnings from these things are an incentive to cheat. back in the 40s, there wasn't as much incentive to cheat as there is now, so less need for drugs. i'm disappointed to hear that about grimek. i doubt Atlas used testosterone. or lalanne.

Steve Reeves got to do some things on TV after winning the Universe. He took acting lessons and got to do some plays. Then he got into films and Hercules was a huge success. His titles gave him the attention to turn it into an acting career. Only Arnold beat him in the movie biz.

Today it's about endorsing products and raking in the dough. You're right about the temptation to cheat today. That is why I blame the IFBB because they don't test, but then again, the Weiders sell supplements, exercise gear, and publish magazines.
