Bob Hope
Netflix is running a very good documentary on Bob Hope.
They did not go into detail, but during WWII they show him laying in a hospital bed on one of the fronts. They said he was nearly killed, but that was it.
The Vietcong tried to kill him, and missed. Barely.
For all of his flaws, he was quite a guy.
I remember the watching the specials with my grandparents in the 60's and 70's. I guess he was even recorded by Richard Nixon.

Re: Bob Hope
I had the opportunity to see about the last 15 minutes or so of a show he did at the Subic Bay Naval Base. I can't remember who the actress was with him. I got to see Bob Hope. From the time I was a kid, and we got a TV, I loved seeing his movies, especially the Road pictures with Crosby, and the TV specials. I always got a kick out of him. He was a talented guy.

Re: Bob Hope
My dad told me that during WWII when celebrities would perform for the soldiers, most of them went off to stay with the officers whereas Bob Hope would remain with the regulars. My dad spoke highly of his efforts.

Re: Bob Hope
One of the commentators was Tom Selleck. I like Tom Selleck, but he alludes to Vietnam and how Bob Hope "lifted his and the other soldier's spirits". However, Tom Selleck was enlisted in the California guard after being issued draft orders. I am not a veteran, and I do not criticize him for that choice, but he was never in Vietnam.

Re: Bob Hope
the vast majority of U.S. service women and men during the vietnam era didn't go to 'nam. people forget about all the service men and women that were stationed in europe and korea, and other places. my late ex brother in law was in the air force during the vietnam era, and he went to alaska instead of 'nam. and the national guard is every bit as important as the regular army is. the 116th infantry regt. was the first one to go ashore on omaha beach on D-Day, 1944. it was a national guard unit. there is nothing cowardly about serving in the national guard. it got called up in ww1 and ww2 and in the gulf war. and westmoreland wanted to call it up in '68, but didn't have the nerve to ask lbj for it. don't forget who it was who had to fight all the riots in the '60s. there was a very good possibility tom selleck's unit could have been called up and sent to 'nam. people who served in the guard weren't any more avoiding Vietnam than the people serving in the icbm silos in kansas were.

Re: Bob Hope
oh no! i wasn't getting on to you. by no means. you post just reminded me of how the left have dissed tom selleck in the past for being in the guard instead of 'nam. they dissed other repubs for being in the guard during that era, instead of nam. and that is a pet peeve i have.

Dan Quayle if I am not mistaken, even though their golden boy headed to Moscow, if I remember correctly.
