Bruno Sammartino

A wrestling, and Pittsburgh, legend, Bruno Sammartino, passed away. He was 82. Living here as long as I have, and all my connections, I never heard anyone say anything bad about Bruno. Only good things. He was one of a kind. One story about him on the local news was that he sold out Madison Square Garden 188 times. Quite a guy, and with his championships, he wouldn't play the game of scripted bouts. You had to actually beat him if you wanted the belt. There'll never be another like him.

Re: Bruno Sammartino

It has been said that if Bruno had committed himself to being a weightlifter nobody could have touched the records he would have made. I imagine this is a sad day for many citizens in Pittsburgh............and all over the nation.

As far as weight lifting goes in 1959 he was the first man to bench over 500 lbs. On Super Strength's facebook page it's said he benched 565 lbs.

Years ago I read where a professional trainer, I believe for the Pittsburgh Steelers, said Bruno's body had taken more punishment than any athlete he had ever seen. I doubt we will ever see the likes of him again.

In "those days" a 500 pound bench was legitimate.

When I was young I would buy the wrestling magazines monthly to see how Bruno Sammartino had fared in his matches.
