A BASEBALL GEM
With the kickoff of the Major League baseball season I have found a real gem on youtube. It is titled, Apr. 14, 1931-Scenes at a Yankees vs Red Sox Game. It has a fine closeup of Ruth and Gehrig taking batting practice before the game. The atmosphere of the game is tremendous and crowd scenes are very enjoyable to see. The video runs about 14:21. Well worth a look.

Re: A BASEBALL GEM
Hand the crowd cell phones and then listen to them belly ache that baseball is boring.

Re: A BASEBALL GEM
The game mentioned above was played during the height of the depression. Yet, judging by the zest of the crowd you could not see the gloom of the depression. Perhaps the average Joe in the stands back then had a longer attention span than those attending baseball games today.

Re: A BASEBALL GEM
This was an amazing video. Ruth and Gehrig at the height of their powers. I may have mentioned this before, but if any of you have time, read The Year Babe Ruth Hit 104 Home Runs. Fascinating the research that went into the book, and what the Babe might have done had he played in ballparks that did not have 480 foot centerfield walls.
What is amazing, even sticking a mic in the front of the Babe he seemed a bit unsure of how to handle it.
The height of the Depression and the stands are full, and folks are dressed like they are headed to the opera. I noticed women, people of color, etc. Not as "segregated" as one might have expected.
Thanks for the post.

Re: A BASEBALL GEM
The baseballs Ruth and Gehrig were hitting were not the "golf" balls of today. He/they might well have hit 104 home runs in this era.

Re: A BASEBALL GEM
Another interesting thing in this video is that when the national anthem is being played a train traveling by the stadium stopped at the playing of the anthem. What a difference from today.
