Well then let's give him his due.

Kirk Douglas enlisted in the USN shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor and we declared war on Japan. He held the rank of a Lt Junior Grade (LTJG) and served as a communications officer in anti-submarine warfare on the USS PC-1137. He sustained injuries in an accidental dropping of a depth charge and was medically discharged in 1944.

don adams was in the marines in ww2. he During World War II, he joined the United States Marine Corps. Adams participated in the Battle of Guadalcanal in the Pacific Theater of Operations. His combat service was short-lived; he contracted blackwater fever, a serious complication of malaria, known for a 90% rate of fatality. He was evacuated and then hospitalized for more than a year at a Navy hospital in Wellington, New Zealand. After his recovery, he served as a Marine drill instructor in the United States. (yes, i copied and pasted off of wikipedia.)

Re: Celebs that served in the Military

I found a few sites besides Wikipedia to get my info. On some sites, including wiki, you'll find they either don't include everyone that served, or they give very little information. In a list like this I think it's important to name what they did. Like I never knew Paul Newman served in the Navy during WW2 and was a radioman and gunner on a bomber in the Pacific theater. That took a lot of guts. It gave me a whole new perspective of him. It's also a good way to honor what they did.

Steve Reeves enlisted in the Army during WW2. After boot camp he was assigned to the 25th Combat Division of the infantry. His perseverance to continue training while in the military is amazing. While serving in the Philippines he came across a guy with a 100 lb barbell set and he bought it from him. He talked some of his buddies to each carry a plate and he moved the barbell with rifles that were being transferred to the same same places he was heading. The guys called him "The Shape" and then it was shortened to Shape. He saw combat in the taking of Balete Pass in the Philippines. In June of '45 he contracted malaria and his weight went from 203 lbs to 175 lbs. After 2 months he was cured and was transferred to the Quartermaster Corps, and was sent to Japan as part of the occupation troops. Judging by the picture of him in his uniform he was a corporal.

Buddy Ebsen was a proficient sailor and when we entered WW2 he tried to get an officer's commission from the Navy but was turned down. He then tried the Coast Guard and they commissioned him as a LTJG. He first served as a damage control officer then as the executive officer (next in command to the captain) on the Coast Guard manned Navy ship the USS Pocatello. It served as a weather station 1500 miles west of Seattle. He was honorably discharged as a LT in 1946.

James Coburn enlisted in the Army in 1950 and served as a truck driver and part time radio DJ on an Army radio station. He also did narrations on Army training films in Mainz Germany.

He certainly went on to have a fine career as an actor. The guys listed in this thread are far different than those in the movie industry of today.

There's a list of Hollywood actors and entertainers that left their jobs to go into the military after Pearl Harbor. There were many. Compare that to the Hollywood actors and entertainers that joined the military after 9/11, and there were zero.
