Christopher Lee, the Assassin?

There are a lot of "stories" that are associated with our entertainers of the past, particularly the WWII generation. Where does fact meet myth?

A great one, that may, or may not be steeped in truth, revolves around a situation with Christopher Lee. During a stint in WWII, Hammer's Dracula was posted to the Home Guard. Rumor is, he was a Nazi spy hunter. (He was a Nazi hunter post WWII...)

While the filming of The Lord of the Rings, when Lee's character is stabbed in the back, Peter Jackson asked Lee to give a blood curdling scream. (I vaguely remember such a scene, but again, this is legend...)

Christopher Lee turned to Jakcson and stated, (I paraphrase): I can tell you, when a man is stabbed in the back, he does not have the capability to scream.

With that, the cast and crew were silent for a bit.

I keep finding stories about WWII vets in the entertainment industry too. A number of them were combat vets.

The latest was Paul Newman. He was in the Navy during WWII and was a radioman. He also was a turret gunner in the Avenger torpedo plane. Before the battle of Okinawa his squadron was sent to the Bunker Hill. His pilot had an ear infection so they didn't leave with the rest. The others were killed when a kamikazi pilot flew into the Bunker Hill.

When I was in bootcamp the Bunker Hill was anchored very near us. I'd see it every time we went to the mess hall. One morning it was gone. Either Gillette or Schick bought it, so if you you use those razors you've been shaving with the Bunker Hill.

Ian Fleming thought of himself as a master spy even before he gave the world James Bond. Although he planned several guerilla actions against the Germans, he was never allowed to lead the actual excursions. Of course he wanted to. (His mum had pull with Churchill.)

Hemingway was almost put before a military court for leading a group of French resistance fighters in a confrontation with the Germans. As a reporter he was not, by law, allowed to be involved in combat. I believe Patton got him off the hook.

Of course Ted Williams was quite a fighter pilot. DiMaggio gave Williams a compliment, stating his skills as a baseball player aided him in his better than average piloting skills. (A compliment from DiMaggio was out of character for him.)

Many of the men and women of that generation, that went on to stardom, seemed to have very excellent credentials in their war records.

Curt Gowdy once said Ted Williams was the best pilot, hitter, and fisherman he had ever seen. Ted seemed to be the best at anything he pursued.
