Humphrey Bogart

So we did favorite John Wayne clips, now Humphrey Bogart, the cynical anti-hero who ends up doing what is right in the end.

"What's that?"

"It's the stuff dreams are made of..."

Re: Humphrey Bogart

He never played the gung ho American like John Wayne. Just a different approach. Unfortunately as we move away from Hollywood's "Golden Age" he is starting to slip on the greatest actor list.

I guess IMBD makes my point for me.

I can never agree even remotely with such lists. I guess a lot of people do however.

Re: Humphrey Bogart

OK, here we go:

1. Sir Laurence Olivier
2. Humphrey Bogart (Richard Blaine, is there a better movie character?)
3. Paul Nemwan (Cool Hand Luke)
4. Kevin Spacey (He was a genius in American Beauty and the Usual Suspects, and the little known The Ref, and Shrink...)
5) Sidney Portier (No Denzell without Sidney...)
6) Robert de Niro
7) Robert Duvall
8) Gregory Peck (Like Humphrey Bogart, how does he land in the 30's?)
9) Robert Redford (87?)
10) Marlon Brando/Al Pacino Marlon Brando's politics may have been contrair, but he could act (Don Juan DeMarco). And Al Pacino is a modern classic.

I think some get sympathy votes: Phillip Seymore Hoffman (Although the portly Phillip gets to doink Marisa Tomei in: Before the Devil Knows Your Dead...), Robin Williams (Who really did transforms himself from Mork to those great roles in Dead Poet's Society and Good Will Hunting...)

James Stewart and Spencer Tracy are in the running for top 15. Tom Hanks at 7? a very affable actor, and stepped out for Castaway, but not a real action hero like he tries to portray in the Luminati/Masonic movies he is doing. (Inferno?)

And really, where are Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Rambo and Dutch, not represented? That alone nullifies this list!

Edit: I could put Ben Kingsley at 10 as well. Really, like baseball, after Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth, the waters begin to muddy. After the 10 trio, you can roll the dice.

Heston had a fine voice as a narrator as well.
