Real strength

The strongest people are the oldtime laborers before automation came into play. The coal miners, steel mill workers, the section hands on the railroads, the lumberjacks, the dock workers, the farmers and construction workers as well. Plus, any other laborers that I might have missed. These guys were super strong. Like my grandpa and great grandpa, his father-in-law. He was a coal miner and farmer all of his life. He was 6'4" and about 260 lbs. He was all man, too. My grandma said she seen him pick a guy up once off of the ground across the fence by his collar and hold him in the air while he talked to him during an argument. My grandpa said he seen him pick up a switch, which was a motor for a buggy in the mines and it weighed 600 lbs. and carry it over to the table and set it on it to be worked on, and he was in his mid-late 50's then! Imagine if somebody like that hit you or got ahold of you. They'd kill you! Now, my grandpa was the hardest worker I ever seen, but he said he hated working for my great grandpa in the mines, as he tried to kill you working. My grandma told me that my grandpa moved them into their first apartment after they got married and it was on the third floor. He weighed about 175 lbs. at the time, but had been a miner and farmer all of his life, with the exception of his 3 year stint in the Marines during WWII. Anyways, she said he strapped the refrigerator on his back, which was the old fridges thatw as made of pure steel back in the 40's and heavy as all get out. He carried that upstairs. he also strapped the old coal/wood stove to his back and carried it upstairs as well. Those things were hundreds of pounds of pure steel. During the late 50's and 60's he worked as meat mgr. at A&P until he moved back to West Virginia and went back to work in the mines and that was back when the meat would come in the whole slab, not packages like it is now. He'd tear apart the whole slab with his hands right down the middle. He also used to regularly break bowling pins when he bowled. You won't see total weightlifters having this kind of functional strength.

the guys from back then were something else. they did not veer away from the difficult as is the case much of the time today. the women at that time also had tremendous grit and fortitude. a tip of my atlas cap to them.

i had an uncle-in-law like that. imagine hand to hand combat in the civil war before the southerners began starving to death. or the revolution, when the professional armies of britain had to face the farm boys and lumberjacks of the American army in hand to hand combat.

Re: Real strength

about 20 years ago i had a photo of a high school football team from i believe the year 1906. it was the logan co. high school team from this state. the players were boys that were raised on farms. they had heavy work to do in addition to going to school and playing football. some of them had huge barrel like chests while the others had no visible signs of excess flesh on them. they looked a far cry from the fat bloated linemen of today. the average pro football game lasts between 3 and 3 1/2 hours to play. this for a 60 minute game. some of the linemen weigh in the neighborhood of 375 pounds. you can imagine what would happen to them if they had to play both offense and defense like the old timers. plus the old timers did not have hours of tv timeouts to catch a rest. they would be dropping like flies. in a game earlier this year i saw a fat tackle about to drop after his team made several first downs on the opening drive of the game.

them big heavy guys didn't used to be allowed to even be on the team. it wasn't too long ago when nfl linemen were around 6'5" and 250 lbs. back in the '70s and '80s.

yes, everyone back then was brutes with intestinal fortitude that was unmatched in today's world! even the women! the women had grips like vices, as they kneaded dough all day and washed the clothes on the wash boards and then rung them dry. life was tough back then and the people were tough right along with it. look at how many rounds the old boxers used to go. just like in football, they were a totally different breed of athletes. look at the heavyweight boxers of old, as compared to the heavyweight boxers of now. same as in the football linemen. there is no comparison! that's a testament to their lifestyle and work ethic. those days are long gone.
