mothom On the Definition of BBing
another mothom rant here. you can probably deduce that i've been looking at pictures of bbers again, in this case youtube videos. i'm having to try to unsee what i saw, hopefully this rant will help some.
the definition of bbing has definitely morphed over the years. i think it's a perfect example of the 2nd law of thermodynamics. also known as entropy. simply put, entropy states that all things tend to disorder. a perfect example of entropy is a teenagers bed room.
when Charles Atlas first began offering his course to the general public back in the 1920s, bbing was the act of improving one's appearance, strength, stamina, endurance, physical capabilities, and health through proper combinations of exercise, diet, rest, and nutrition.
that changed pretty quickly so that by when the 1940s rolled around it became an activity that built up a person's muscles as big and ripped as they possibly could while preserving symmetry and meanwhile improving one's health without using drugs. steve reeves said his goal was to be the healthiest man in the world.
that definition didn't last long either. in the 1960s to 1992 it became an activity that built one's muscles as big and ripped as possible while maintaining symmetry doing whatever it took, including drugs and silicone implants if that's what it took. health, etc. were no longer important.
in 1992 to the present time, it changed again to an activity that builds the muscles up as big and ripped as possible, doing whatever it takes. symmetry got tossed out the window.
bbers from the 1920s and 1930s would get laughed off the stage. bbers from the 1940s and 1950s would too. bbers from the 1960s to 1992 would be given a word of encouragement and then relegated to amateur status and competing in local level contests until they've developed enough to move on to the pros and more prestigious events.
the appearance of all-natural bbing organizations, fitness model competition and classic bbing competition notwithstanding, the face of modern bbing is still the ifbb's mr. olympia. the steroid freaks. those other movements have yet to push the drug crowd back into the closet, from what i can tell. and quite frankly, even though they can't, i really do believe that the all-natural bbers would try to look like the drug crowd's ideal if they could achieve it naturally. and i'm in bewilderment as to which one of these new movements have as a goal the original goals of bbing. it seems they too are just trying for a certain look. drugs can be used to achieve a fitness model ideal as well as a classic bber ideal. the naturals come the closest, but i suspect they harbor fantasies of looking like a freak if they could do so naturally.
it's not my purpose to condemn anyone. i know the guys on this forum are pretty much on the same page as me on this issue, but we get lots of visitors here, and i don't know who they are. if they want to look like a freak, they have my permission to do so. if they are willing to destroy their body in the process, they have my permission to do so. i would encourage them not to do so, but if that's what they want, they can go ahead. i'm not trying to condemn them. i'm not trying to boss anybody.
all the forgoing is just my opinion, and you are entitled to it, and to your own as well.

Their is a name for the plague that took over the BB landscape. A landscape that has caused many premature deaths. The name of that plague is Weider.

Frank Zane is the the last great bodybuilder to win an Olympia. The 80's saw that transition to freak which really hit hyper-drive with Dorian Yates.
Great post!

Re: mothom On the Definition of BBing
Anything out of the ordinary always gets the news. So that is why the winner of the Mr O gets all the attention. It's a freak show and controversial. There are tons of videos on youtube on fitness. Those are the ones I watch. BBing has suffered immensely because of the drugs and freakish bodies. That is why I like the term 'physical culture'. The vast majority of folk are interested in improving their appearance and health. Not becoming a behemoth.

if you poked a hole in them they'd fly around from one side of the room to the other until they looked like a balloon with all the air let out.
