Another Long Lived Physical Culturist

This past week I obtained the 1906 book, Muscular Power and Beauty, by Bernarr MacFadden. I had this same edition until about 2007 or thereabouts when I gave it to our friend Rich, Atlasman. Several years ago I purchased the reprint soft bound edition and sent it to a friend. In the front of the book I just obtained has the name and address of the previous owner and the year he purchased the book, 1913. I have always been interested in finding out about Physical Culturists from back in the day. I was very pleased to find out that the owner of this book Walter H. Molin of Portland, Oregon, was born on July 9th, 1894 and lived until March 29th, 1991, or 96.8 years of age. Coincidentally, one of the bodybuilders that inspired me the most was a Mr. Owen T. Carr, also of Portland, Oregon. Mr. Carr use to be featured in vintage muscle mags of his day as well as ads for the Milo Barbell Co. Mr. Carr was born on October 12th, 1892, and lived until February 13th, 1984, also into his 90's. It seems overwhelmingly that the Physical Culturists of their time far outpaced their fellow non Physical Culturists in longevity.

That is a fine testimonial for both him and the Atlas course.

Love him or hate him, Arnold Schwarzenegger brought bodybuilding into the mainstream in the 70's and early 80s. He was charismatic, had a physique (as well as Frank Zane) that the average person could look at and relate, and promoted the sport through Punping Iron and movies like Termonator and Predator.

As much as the Weiders sabotaged their own product with the 1980 Olympia, it continued to gain momentum, I think, into the mid-1980s. Then the wheels started to come off the cart.

and Frank Zane:

Now we have bobdybuilders dropping on stage (literally, in an Australian competition a competitor dropped dead on stage, they carted him off and let the competition continue...)

As you know this is what Mr. O lookes like now :

Phil Heath, last years winner is a former college basketball player. There is a lot of alchemy going on with that.

Sorry those pictures are so byg. But, here is a pretty good perspective from T-Nation.

A far cry from physical culture.

notice phil heath has no balls? arnold? you said it, love him or hate him. sometimes i like him, some times i don't. but i don't hate him. if there were magic words i could say and instantly look like him, i'd avoid at all costs saying them words. steve reeves is the most i'd ever care to look like. or maybe a 1951 reg park.

Not something the majority of people would aspire to look like.
